Poker tends to be a very complex game where no two players have the same level and type of skills. The expert players know several different concepts and strategies which help them get an edge over the others. There are a few very important concepts that are known to all professional players and they help lay a solid foundation for winning play. Without an understanding of these terms it would be difficult to play poker at a higher level.
Hand reading
For high limit poker games one of the most important skills to master is hand reading. Basically, hand reading is trying to guess what cards the opponent has. Although it is rare to do this precisely it is possible to guess the hands on a particular range. As the game progresses the range can be narrowed down according to the actions of the opponent. In order to be good at hand reading it is necessary to focus on how the opponent plays the hand. It is important to keep an eye on what the active players do on the table and what their cards are during showdown.
Hand reading requires practice and is not a skill that can be developed in a short time. Think about the position of the player and if their actions are consistent with their hands.
Value betting
Value betting is making a bet when there is a close decision between checking and betting. With a value bet the player would be targeting every single dollar of value that can be won with the hand. The professional players can unmercifully value bet and they are not afraid of raise. Even skilled opponents can miss profitable value bets on the river. They believe that the pot is large enough and they have done everything they can so they simply check even with a good hand. However, no pot can be big enough. The bet will either have a positive or a negative expectation. Basically, value betting is all about thinking in the long run and not settling down for a pot that could have been bigger.
With no limit games it is advisable to value bet more than other players but with limit games it is necessary to be a little cautious. When there is a close decision to be made the player has to think if the bet is likely to be a mistake. With medium hands that would have to be folded with a raise it is best to be conservative since the opponent may bluff and raise at any time. However, with strong hands the player should be confident and should place the bet without worrying about a raise. Value betting should not be taken to the extreme in either way.
A good player would hope to win two large bets every hour on an average. This goes to show how important value bets are because of the money they can bring in. A bet can either be profitable or not and a player has to determine the thin line between both of these.
