Wisconsin is one of the states which form the United States of America. It is located in the north central of the federal state of the US. It borders the Minnesota State to the west; Illinois State to the south; Iowa State to the south west; Michigan State to north east. It also borders lakes like Lake Michigan (to the east) and to the north it borders Lake Superior. The capital of Wisconsin state is Madison but the largest city in the state is Milwaukee.
The state is composed of 72 counties. According to United States census of 2010, the Wisconsin State has population of close to six million people. Though it lies to the north point of the USA; this sate does not border with Canada. Its geographical features have made it a beautiful place and one of the favorite holiday and tourist destinations in the United States.
It is geographically divided in to five regions. The northern of the state features the lowland of Lake Superior and the lake itself. As you head towards south, the Wisconsin northern highlands feature coniferous forests and hardwood. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers an area over 1.5 million acres. There are also several glacial lakes in the state.
The highest point of the Wisconsin state is Timms Hill. At the central parts of the state there are interesting geographical features like Rich Farmland Central Plain and the Wisconsin River Dells (these are beautiful sandstone formations which are points of tourist attraction).
The largest cities in the Wisconsin state are situated in the lowlands and the eastern ridges. The ridges in this state include Magnesian escarpment, Niagara escarpment, Black River escarpment and the stretches which originate from the New York state.
Wisconsin is one of those states which are well covered by forests. It is estimated that about 46% of the total landmass of this state is covered by forest. The state has very good soil for farming and is considered one of the most productive states of the US.
As mentioned earlier, this state is a focal point for tourist attractions in the US. Its humid continental climate is generally tolerable by most people. The major attractions include Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Blue Mounds state park and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and trails like the Ice Age National Scenic and North Country National Scenic. The most predominant religion in Wisconsin state is Christianity. Majority of the Christians are Roman Catholics while the rest are various protestant faiths.
According to the FBI, there are moderate incidences of crime in the state. There are moderately high cases of rape, murder, involuntary manslaughter, robberies, child molestation and various other crimes. Wisconsin is popular in the US history because it is in this state in which the Republican Party was born. Majority of the residents of this state were republicans in the early days of civil war.
Most of the elected representatives to the legislature and other political representatives are Republicans. When it comes to presidential elections the case is different. Democrats have successively won the presidential vote by great margin against the Republicans during the previous presidential elections.
